Frequently asked questions
What quality should I use?
Around 75% gives a big size reduction with no visible difference for most photos.
Why is WebP smaller?
WebP is a modern format that compresses better than JPG. All current browsers support it.
What happens to transparency?
WebP keeps transparency. JPG does not support it, so transparent areas become white.
What if the result is bigger?
If a file cannot be made smaller, you get the original back and the tool tells you so.
How does “Target size” work?
The tool searches for the highest quality that stays under your limit, and scales the image down a little only when quality alone is not enough.
What does the PNG mode do?
It keeps the PNG format: “Lossless” stores exactly the same pixels in a smaller file, and a palette of 256 colours or fewer makes logos, icons and screenshots much smaller.
